Melbourne and Sydney are the thriving hubs of an estimated 91,000 Australians who identify as Jewish across the country. So it follows that Melbourne and Sydney hold many bar/ bat mitzvah celebrations throughout the year.
Some families choose to go all out and host a celebration on a scale similar to a wedding. Others choose to have a more modest affair. Either way, at the heart of these events, is celebrating a child’s coming of age with family and friends.
To help you get ready for your child’s special milestone, we asked the experts for some advice.
How much does a bar or bat mitzvah party cost?
A bar and bat mitzvah can cost as little or as much as your budget and expectations allow. For Melbourne and Sydney events, they can cost anywhere between $600 and $60,000, and often somewhere in between.
Regardless of how much you’re spending, the top 5 items to swallow up most of your budget will look something like this:
- Food and beverage
- Venue hire
Owner of Chillizone, Dean Mancer says it’s typical for clients to spend upwards of $1500 hiring event furniture for bar and bat mitzvah events. “Our clients hire our ottomans, tables and other seating options to suit whatever theme or style chosen for the party. Ottomans are our most popular.”
What are common questions when planning a bar/bat mitzvah?
Aside from the obvious questions such as the number of guests, to hire a venue or to have it at home, to host a lunch or a dinner, there’s also:
- how best to keep the younger kids entertained throughout the event
- where are the best places to source catering, DJ’s and event furniture and
- how to get that element of uniqueness, without spending a fortune.
Perhaps you’ve been to a few bar and bat mitzvahs in your time and already have a good handle on this. Or you’re super keen to roll up your sleeves, do the research and test out your excel spreadsheet skills and map out the tasks ahead.
Event planners already have the expertise and connections with suppliers to make this process easy for you.
Dean adds “At Chillizone, we’ll work with event planners and stylists in Melbourne and Sydney, or directly with the families, to provide the different furniture items to match the colour and style.”
Nat Roth from P2P events says “It’s definately possible to achieve a great look regardless of your budget. You just have to be smart about where you spend your dollars.”
Event planners also have many tricks up their sleeve to keep kids happy and engaged, including keeping to a tight run sheet so there’s no lull in the event.
How can you make the planning process smoother?
Even if it’s just for the last few weeks of planning, hiring an event co-ordinator can take the headache out of pulling all the pieces together.
Jackie Jacobson from Jackie Jacobson Events says “Sometimes clients are quite creative and want to plan their function themselves however approximately 4 weeks leading into the event they realise there is still lots to do such as organising the running sheet, bump in and out schedules, contacting all suppliers and ensuring nothing is forgotten. This is often when I join in. As well as helping prior to the event, an event planner assists on the night. Making sure the function runs smoothly and on time as well as putting our any fires, should they arrive.”
What has changed in the last few years for bar and bat mitzvah parties?
Our experts suggest that:
- People want their function to look amazing without spending huge money.
- Planning and booking ahead is essential as trendy venues get booked quickly.
- Shorter functions are best, around three to four hours.
- There’s more focus on colour theming rather than specific themes.
“Choosing just a few colours and keeping them consistent, from the food, to the napkins, to the furniture is a really common way to theme the event, regardless of your budget”, says Nat.
